Chez Jules — Moules-Frites & Boulonnais Seafood

Tucked into the Rue de Lille in the Haute-Ville, Chez Jules has been feeding Boulonnais families and savvy visitors for decades with unfussy, generous plates of mussels cooked in local cream and Maroilles, turbots roasted with sea-salted butter, and a fish soup that makes a proper bouillabaisse look timid. The dining room is wood-panelled, the service is brisk and the wine list is short but honest

What to Order

Start with the soupe de poisson served with rouille, gruyère and croutons — it is thick, deeply orange and tastes like the whole Channel has been reduced into a bowl.

Follow with the moules à la crème Maroilles: the funky washed-rind cheese melts into the cream and white wine to produce a sauce so good you will order extra bread. A half-litre of local Affligem blonde beer is the correct pairing.

For a main course, the sole meunière is filleted at the table and comes with a cloud of pommes purée made with Normandy butter — simple, seasonal and exactly right.

The Boulonnais Seafood Tradition

Boulogne-sur-Mer is the largest fresh-fish auction port in France, handling over 30,000 tonnes of fish a year, which means the seafood in the city's restaurants is genuinely fresher than almost anywhere else in the country.

The local speciality to look out for is hareng fumé (smoked herring), cured in the traditional fumeries of the port district; several restaurants serve it as a warm salad with waxy potatoes and a mustardy vinaigrette.

Neighbourhood Context

The Rue de Lille in the Haute-Ville is the best street for eating in Boulogne, with a handful of restaurants and a wine bar within 200 metres of each other — easy to compare menus before committing.

Book ahead for Friday and Saturday evenings; the room is small and fills quickly with locals who treat it as a weekly ritual.
