Global Vipassana Pagoda, Gorai
Across Gorai Creek from Borivali, a vast golden dome rises from the coastline like a vision — the Global Vipassana Pagoda is one of the largest stone domes built without any supporting pillars in the world, and it remains one of Mumbai's most serene and undervisited landmarks.
A monument to mindfulness
The Global Vipassana Pagoda stands near Gorai village, a short ferry ride from the Gorai Jetty in Borivali West. Its soaring golden dome is modelled on the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and houses a meditation hall large enough to seat thousands of practitioners simultaneously. Relics of the Buddha are enshrined within.
The pagoda was built to honour S. N. Goenka, the Burmese-Indian teacher who revived Vipassana meditation, and to spread awareness of the technique. Even visitors with no interest in meditation find the scale and craftsmanship breathtaking — and the surrounding gardens and creek views are among the most tranquil spots in all of Mumbai.
Getting there: the ferry is half the fun
Take an auto-rickshaw from Borivali Station to the Gorai Jetty, then board one of the regular ferries across Gorai Creek — the 10–15 minute crossing, with mangroves sliding past on both sides, is a genuine highlight. Flamingos have been spotted in the creek, particularly in the cooler months.
Entry to the pagoda is free. Modest dress is required; remove footwear before entering the dome. The pagoda is open to all faiths and backgrounds — simply arrive, breathe, and let the city fall away.
