Teufelsmauer (Devil's Wall) Ridge Trail

A jagged curtain of Upper Cretaceous sandstone erupts from the forest floor north of Blankenburg, stretching for kilometres towards Ballenstedt. The Teufelsmauer ridge trail is the Harz's most dramatic short hike — part scramble, part panorama, entirely unforgettable.

Großvaterfelsen to Hamburger Wappen

The classic route begins at the Großvaterfelsen (Grandfather Rock) on the edge of Blankenburg and threads over cliffs and through narrow rock crevices past the eerie Thunderstorm Grotto before arriving at the Hamburger Wappen — three sandstone pinnacles near Timmenrode whose silhouette uncannily resembles the Hamburg coat of arms.

The trail is approximately 7.6 km with around 220 m of elevation gain and takes two to two-and-a-half hours at a comfortable pace. It earns a 4.6-star rating from nearly 200 AllTrails reviews and is a stamping point (No. 74) on the beloved Harzer Wandernadel hiking-badge network.

Legends, Film Sets & Hidden Grottos

The Teufelsmauer's bizarre formations have inspired devil legends for centuries and regularly lure film productions to the Harz. The Blankenburg section, known locally as 'Heidelberg', contains an artificial rock cellar called the Fox's Den and the small medieval fortification of the Kucksburg at the eastern end.

The sunny south-slope return path at the foot of the wall brings you back to Blankenburg through fragrant pine forest, with open views over the village of Timmenrode and across the Harz foreland.

Trail Tips

Sturdy footwear with a good tread is essential — the natural climbing path crosses exposed rock and narrow crevices. The route is suitable for children from about age six upwards with care.

The Gaststätte Teufelsmauer inn, 500 m from the Hamburger Wappen, is open Wednesday to Sunday and is the ideal mid-hike refreshment stop. Start before 10 am to have the formations largely to yourself.
