Burg Regenstein Rock Castle
Three kilometres north of Blankenburg, a sandstone spur rises from the forest like a natural fortress — because it was one. Burg Regenstein is a medieval castle literally carved out of the rock, with 32 surviving rock-cut chambers that no conventional ruin can match.
A Castle Unlike Any Other
Built from the 12th century on a 294-metre sandstone outcrop, Regenstein was carved directly into the living rock — its rooms, staircases and ditches are hewn stone rather than built masonry. The impressively preserved rock-cut chambers give a visceral sense of how formidable this fortress once was.
The entire site operates as an open-air museum. From the highest rock platforms, on a clear day, a panoramic view of up to 50 kilometres is possible, taking in the Brocken summit and the Harz foreland all the way to the plains of Saxony-Anhalt.
Knights, Garrisons & Annual Festivals
Each year Regenstein hosts a knight's tournament and a garrison festival that bring the medieval atmosphere roaring back to life, with costumed re-enactors filling the rock-cut courtyards. Easter and Whitsun are also popular festival dates.
A bistro on the grounds means you can linger over lunch with castle walls literally rising from the sandstone around you — one of the most unusual picnic settings in northern Germany.
Reaching Regenstein on Foot
The most rewarding approach follows the Goldbach stream from central Blankenburg past a chain of historic mills — the Mönchemühle, Birkentalmühle, Goldbacher Mühle and Regensteinsmühle — before climbing to the castle. The route is signposted as Harzer Wandernadel No. 80.
Drivers can use the Regenstein car park directly off the B81 road. From there it is a short uphill walk to the castle entrance.
