Kloster Michaelstein (Michaelstein Monastery)
Just on the edge of Blankenburg, a Cistercian monastery founded in the 12th century sits in meadowed tranquility — part of the Romanesque Road of Saxony-Anhalt and home to one of Germany's most unusual music museums. History buffs, concert-goers and garden lovers all leave enchanted.
Stone, Silence and the Romanesque Road
Founded by Cistercian monks in the 12th century, Kloster Michaelstein has preserved its cloister, refectory, chapter house, great barn, abbot's house, forge and former stables — a remarkably complete monastic ensemble that conveys the sublime austerity the Cistercians prized above all else.
The monastery is a listed stop on Saxony-Anhalt's Romanesque Road, and medieval monastery gardens modelled on historic plans surround the cloister, planted with herbs, medicinal plants and fruit trees that would have been familiar to the monks themselves.
KlangZeitRaum — A Museum of Musical Time
The Baroque west wing houses the permanent exhibition 'KlangZeitRaum — On the Trail of the Secret of Music', displaying instruments from the last four centuries sourced from across Europe. It is a rare chance to trace the evolution of sound through beautifully preserved historical objects in a setting of breathtaking architectural calm.
The Saxony-Anhalt Music Academy for Education and Performance is based here, and the annual Michaelstein Monastery Concerts run from spring through autumn, ranging from intimate chamber music to large-scale oratorios performed in the refectory, the old forge, and the music barn.
Visiting Practically
The monastery museum, cloister and gardens are open to the public. Guided tours covering the monastery's history, gardens and music exhibition are available and suitable for all ages, with regular workshops running throughout the year.
Michaelstein sits right at the edge of Blankenburg and is easily walkable from the town centre — combine it with a stroll along the Goldbach valley for a perfect half-day loop.
