Blankenburg Altstadt & Lange Straße

Tucked beneath the castle hill and still partly enclosed by listed medieval town walls, Blankenburg's Altstadt is a compact world of crooked half-timbered facades, cobbled lanes and a medieval-looking Rathaus that has barely changed in centuries. This is where the town actually lives — and where you should too.

A Living Medieval Streetscape

The oldest surviving house in the Altstadt stands on Bäuersche Straße and dates to 1423 — more than half a century before Columbus reached the Americas. The ensemble of old town, fortification wall and castle is so photogenic that it is regularly used as a film location.

Lange Straße, the main shopping arcade threading through the historic core, is lined with independent shops and cafés that give the town its unhurried, local character. The medieval-looking Rathaus and the hilltop Bergkirche St. Bartholomäus are both worth a short detour.

Christmas Market & Seasonal Events

Each December the Altstadt transforms into one of the Harz's cosiest Christmas markets, with the castle looming above the stalls and the scent of Glühwein drifting through the half-timbered lanes. The intimate scale — no vast fairground crowds — is exactly what a mountain-town market should feel like.

In summer the Blankenburg Castle Festival fills the Altstadt and castle grounds with music, theatrical performances and medieval-themed activities, making the whole ensemble feel like a living stage set.

Germany's Only Hostel Museum

Hidden on Bergstraße 15 is the Herbergsmuseum, a five-star-rated curiosity that tells the story of the German youth-hostel movement through original artefacts and period rooms. It is tiny, free of crowds and utterly charming — the definition of a hidden gem.

After the museum, reward yourself at one of the Altstadt's cafés. The Schlosshotel on Schnappelberg 6 also has a terrace with an unbeatable castle view for an afternoon coffee.
