Nurragingy Reserve & Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens

Spread across more than 84 hectares in Doonside, Nurragingy Reserve is Blacktown's great green escape — a place where eucalypt bushland, cycling tracks and BBQ meadows give way, unexpectedly, to a stunning formal Chinese garden. It is the kind of place locals guard jealously and visitors stumble upon with pure delight.

Bushland, Lake & Picnic Lawns

The reserve offers walking and cycling tracks that wind through natural bushland, past a picturesque lake and across open picnic lawns equipped with BBQ facilities and children's playgrounds. It is an ideal spot for an unhurried morning — pack a thermos, hire a bike in Blacktown CBD and pedal the 6 km out.

Birdlife is prolific throughout the reserve, particularly around the lake edge at dawn. Bring binoculars if you have them; rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras and the occasional sulphur-crested cockatoo are reliable sightings.

The Hidden Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens

Tucked within the reserve is the Chang Lai Yuan Chinese Gardens — a formal garden featuring a grand stone gateway, a beautiful Seven Arch Stone Bridge, a Light Mountain Pavilion and a Waterfall Gazebo. It is a genuinely surprising find in the middle of suburban Western Sydney.

The garden is free to enter and rarely crowded on weekday mornings, making it a perfect slow-travel detour. The stone bridge over the pond is the single best photo spot in all of Blacktown.
