Featherdale Sydney Wildlife Park
Tucked away on Kildare Road in Doonside, Featherdale is the closest you will ever get to Australia's most iconic animals without a wildlife ranger's uniform. Hand-feed wallabies, lock eyes with a Tasmanian devil and pose beside a sleepy koala — all in a compact bush setting that feels genuinely intimate.
Australia's Native Animals, Up Close
Featherdale specialises entirely in Australian native wildlife, which means every square metre of the park is devoted to the creatures that make this continent so extraordinary. With over 300 species on site, you will encounter wombats, echidnas, dingoes, reptiles and an enormous collection of koalas — all at arm's length.
The park also shelters endangered species including Tasmanian devils, greater bilbies, southern cassowaries and quolls, giving conservation real meaning for everyday visitors. Come early in the morning when the animals are most active and you will have unhurried encounters that feel nothing like a conventional zoo.
Getting There & Making the Most of It
One of Featherdale's best-kept secrets is how easy it is to reach without a car. The park entrance sits just a three-minute walk from Doonside Station on Sydney's Western Line, making it a genuinely spontaneous day-trip from the city.
Allocate at least three hours to do the park justice. Pack a picnic or grab a bite at the on-site café, and don't blow all your animal feed pellets at the first kangaroo you meet — there are dozens more waiting further along the trail.
