Blacktown CBD Main Street Food Strip
Below the gleaming Westpoint shopping centre, Blacktown's Main Street is one of the most quietly thrilling multicultural eating corridors in all of Sydney. Turkish biscuit shops, Afghani street food stalls, Sudanese grocery stores, Filipino barbecue counters and Indian homewares traders jostle for space in a stretch that feels more like a souk than a suburb.
A Global Pantry on One Street
The Blacktown Asian Food Market at 1 George Street — a three-minute walk from Blacktown Station — anchors the strip with an Asian supermarket, a seafood market and a butcher all under one roof. It has been a local institution since 1993 and draws shoppers from across NSW for its prices and range.
Humza Market at 80 Main Street is the place to hunt for that one authentic ingredient that will elevate your cooking: sour cherry jam, curry pastes, Middle Eastern pickles and a dizzying array of imported snacks from across Asia and the Middle East. It is a genuine neighbourhood grocer with none of the tourist markup.
Friday Nights: Aussie Night Markets
Every Friday from 4 pm to 10 pm, the forecourt of Blacktown Council Chambers and the Village Green at 62 Flushcombe Road transform into the Aussie Night Markets — more than 50 food stalls, a DJ and the whole of Blacktown seemingly out for dinner. Argentine empanadas, Cambodian fish soup and Filipino grilled skewers are perennial crowd favourites.
The energy on a Friday evening is infectious: families spreading out on the grass, teenagers queuing for curly fries, market traders calling out specials. It costs nothing to wander through, and you will almost certainly leave with a full stomach and a new favourite dish.
