Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve
Just 40 kilometres northeast of Bilbao, the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-protected estuary where marshlands, ancient oak forests and wild Atlantic beaches converge in a landscape that feels a world away from the city. It's one of the most important wetlands in southern Europe for migratory birds.
The Estuary & Birdwatching
The Oka River estuary shelters spoonbills, grey herons, oystercatchers and, in winter, thousands of dunlins that wheel above the mudflats in synchronised murmurations. The Centro de Interpretación de Urdaibai in Busturia has free exhibits and a viewing tower over the marshes.
The wooden boardwalk at Kanala, near Mundaka, is the single best spot to watch wading birds at low tide — bring binoculars and arrive in the golden hour before sunset.
Beaches & Surf
Mundaka's left-hand river-mouth wave is considered one of the finest surf breaks in Europe, drawing professionals every autumn when Atlantic swells peak. Even non-surfers find the spectacle of riders dropping into hollow barrels mesmerising from the harbour wall.
A short drive south, the white-sand beach of Laga sits beneath dramatic sandstone cliffs and is far less crowded than the resort beaches closer to Bilbao — it's the kind of place where you feel like you've discovered something.
