Mirador del Artxanda
Ride the 1915 Funicular de Artxanda — a three-minute cable-car trip that costs less than a coffee — and step out onto the hilltop that locals have been picnicking on for over a century. The 360-degree panorama stretches from the Guggenheim's titanium curves to the green Basque mountains that cradle the city.
The Ride Up
The funicular departs from Plaza del Funicular, just off Calle Múgica y Butrón in the Abando district, every 15 minutes. The vintage wooden carriages still feel gloriously old-fashioned against the modern skyline they reveal.
At the top, the terrace opens immediately onto sweeping views — on a clear day you can pick out the cranes of the port of Bilbao to the north and the Urkiola mountain range to the south.
Food & Green Space
Several traditional Basque restaurants and cider houses line the summit, making this a favourite Sunday lunch spot for Bilbaínos. Try Asador Indusi for grilled txuletón (bone-in ribeye) with a terrace view.
The surrounding parkland has shaded picnic tables, a small children's play area and walking trails — it's a genuine neighbourhood escape that most tourists rush past in favour of the Guggenheim.
