Casco Viejo (The Old Quarter)
Bilbao's Casco Viejo — the Old Quarter — is a warren of 14th-century streets known as Las Siete Calles (The Seven Streets), where Gothic churches, independent boutiques and some of the city's most legendary pintxo bars coexist in glorious, noisy harmony. This is where Bilbao eats, drinks and argues about football.
Las Siete Calles
The original seven streets — Barrenkale, Barrenkale Barrena, Carnicería Vieja, Belostikale, Artekale, Tendería and Somera — form a tight medieval grid that rewards aimless wandering. Look up at the ornate iron balconies and carved stone doorways that survived the 1983 floods.
Plaza Nueva, a neoclassical arcaded square completed in 1851, anchors the neighbourhood and hosts a Sunday antiques and book market that draws collectors from across the Basque Country.
Pintxo Crawl Culture
Calle Somera and Calle Barrenkale are the twin spines of Bilbao's pintxo scene. Bar Txiriboga, El Globo and Gure Toki are consistently praised by locals for creative toppings that go well beyond the standard anchovy-on-bread formula.
The ritual is simple: order a drink, point at the pintxos you want on the counter, eat standing up, then move to the next bar. Thursday and Friday evenings, when office workers flood in after 19:00, are the most atmospheric times to join in.
