Rocher de la Vierge
Jutting into the Atlantic on a wave-lashed promontory, the Rocher de la Vierge is the single most dramatic viewpoint in Biarritz — a white statue of the Virgin Mary crowning a rock connected to the mainland by a slender iron footbridge engineered by Gustave Eiffel. On a clear day the Pyrenees roll across the horizon to the south while the Basque coastline curves away in both directions.
The walk out
Cross the narrow iron bridge as waves crash below and salt spray dusts your face — the short crossing feels genuinely adventurous even on a calm afternoon.
Once on the rock, scan south toward the Spanish coast and on crystalline winter mornings you can pick out the peaks of the Pyrenees hovering above the sea like a painted backdrop.
Best time to visit
Sunset in summer turns the Atlantic into hammered copper and the white statue glows pink — arrive 30 minutes before golden hour to claim a spot on the viewing platform.
Winter storms produce spectacular wave action around the base of the rock; watch from the bridge for a safe but thrilling front-row seat to the Bay of Biscay at full fury.
