Miremont Pâtisserie & Salon de Thé

Perched on the Place Georges Clemenceau with a terrace overlooking the Grand Plage, Miremont has been the most elegant address for a pastry in Biarritz since 1872. The gilded interior, with its painted ceilings and mirrored walls, feels like a Parisian salon that wandered to the Atlantic coast — and the gâteau basque here is considered by many locals to be the finest in the region.

What to order

The gâteau basque — a dense, buttery shortcrust tart filled with either black cherry jam or almond-vanilla cream — is the essential order. Miremont's version uses a recipe refined over 150 years and is baked fresh each morning.

The mille-feuille and the chocolate-dipped rochers de Biarritz (coconut-and-chocolate confections that are a local speciality) are equally worth the calories. A pastry and coffee runs to around €8–12 on the terrace.

The setting

The upstairs salon de thé retains its original 19th-century décor — all gilded plasterwork, velvet banquettes and tall windows framing the Atlantic. Reserve a window table in advance for the full theatrical effect.

The ground-floor pâtisserie shop sells boxed assortments of rochers and gâteau basque to take home — a far superior souvenir than anything sold in the airport.
