Les Halles de Biarritz

Tucked just back from the seafront on Rue des Halles, Biarritz's covered market is a sensory masterclass in Basque gastronomy — stalls heave with piment d'Espelette strings, aged Ossau-Iraty sheep's cheese, salt-crusted Bayonne ham and glistening fresh Atlantic fish landed that same morning at Saint-Jean-de-Luz. This is where local chefs shop and where you should eat breakfast.

What to buy

Pick up a braid of dried piment d'Espelette — the mildly smoky red pepper that is the defining spice of Basque cooking and carries its own AOC designation. A 50g braid costs around €4 and travels home beautifully.

The cheese counters stock Ossau-Iraty at various ages; ask for a slice of the 12-month affinage alongside a dab of black cherry jam from Itxassou — the combination is a Basque institution.

Breakfast and lunch at the market

Several stalls and small bars inside the hall serve pintxos (Basque bar snacks on bread) from around 7:30am — order a glass of txakoli and a counter full of pintxos for a €6–8 breakfast that beats any hotel buffet.

The fish counter at the far end is worth a long look even if you're not cooking: whole turbot, spider crabs, and glistening sardines from the Bay of Biscay arrive daily and the fishmongers will vacuum-pack purchases for travel.
