Grande Plage de Biarritz
Framed by the ornate Hôtel du Palais and the art-deco Casino Municipal, the Grande Plage is the grand stage of Biarritz — a wide arc of golden sand where belle-époque elegance meets genuine surf culture. The beach that turned European royalty onto the Atlantic in the 1850s still delivers, whether you're renting a longboard or simply parading along the promenade.
History on the sand
Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III, put Biarritz on the map when she built her summer villa here in 1854 — that villa is now the palatial Hôtel du Palais, whose terracotta towers still preside over the northern end of the beach.
By the 1950s Californian surfers had discovered the consistent Atlantic swells rolling in from the Bay of Biscay, and Biarritz became the birthplace of European surf culture — a legacy celebrated every July at the Biarritz Surf Festival.
Swimming and surfing
The beach is supervised by lifeguards from June to September and colour-coded flags indicate safe swimming zones; the central section is reserved for bathers while flanking zones are designated for surfers.
Surf schools line the promenade and a two-hour beginner lesson typically costs €35–45 including board and wetsuit rental — the gentle shore break here is genuinely one of the best learning environments on the continent.
