Ristorante Taverna
Tucked into a vaulted 16th-century cellar on Via Cipro in the historic centre, Taverna is the kind of place where the menu changes with the season and the owner knows every supplier by first name. It is widely considered the best address in Belluno for authentic Bellunese cuisine — not Venetian, not Tyrolean, but something distinct and proudly local.
What to order
Start with Casunziei all'Ampezzana — half-moon pasta stuffed with beetroot and ricotta, dressed with melted butter, poppy seeds and smoked ricotta. It's the defining dish of the Dolomite valleys and Taverna's version is a benchmark.
For a main, ask for Spezzatino di cervo (venison stew) when it's on the menu in autumn and winter, served with polenta bramata — coarsely ground and slow-cooked for 45 minutes until it reaches the consistency of velvet. Pair it with a bottle of Raboso Piave from the wine list.
Practical details and atmosphere
The dining room seats around 40 in a low-vaulted space with stone walls and candlelight. Booking is strongly recommended on Friday and Saturday evenings and essential in August when Belluno fills with Dolomite hikers.
Lunch is a quieter, more affordable affair — a two-course menu del giorno with wine runs around €18–22 and is popular with local office workers, which is always a good sign.
