Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi
Just 15 km north of the city, the Parco Nazionale Dolomiti Bellunesi protects 31,500 hectares of some of the least-visited Dolomite terrain in Italy — dramatic limestone walls, alpine meadows thick with edelweiss in July, and valley floors carved by glaciers. Unlike the famous Cortina circuit, you may hike for hours here without seeing another soul.
Best trails from the Belluno side
The Valle del Mis is the park's most accessible entry point from Belluno — a 30-minute drive up the SS203 Agordina. The flat path along the turquoise Mis reservoir (about 7 km return) is suitable for all fitness levels and rewards walkers with reflections of the Schiara massif in the still water.
For something more demanding, the ascent to Rifugio 7° Alpini (1,498 m) via the trail from Pian de le Femene takes about 3 hours and delivers views of the Schiara's 2,565 m north face — one of the most imposing rock walls in the eastern Dolomites.
Wildlife and flowers
The park is one of the last strongholds of the Apennine chamois reintroduction programme in the Veneto. Dawn and dusk walks in June and September offer realistic chances of spotting chamois, roe deer and, if you're very quiet, the occasional golden eagle riding thermals above the ridgelines.
The botanical diversity is exceptional: over 1,400 plant species including several endemic to the Belluno Dolomites, among them Campanula morettiana, a tiny violet bellflower that grows only in the cracks of Dolomite rock faces. The park visitor centre in Feltre has excellent free maps and trail guides.
