Colle Visentin Panoramic Road
Drive or cycle the SP 1 up to Colle Visentin (1,763 m) on the southern edge of the Belluno Dolomites and you'll earn a 360-degree panorama that sweeps from the Piave valley floor all the way to the Venetian lagoon on clear winter days. Sunrise here, with mist pooling in the valleys below, is the kind of view that ruins all future landscapes.
Getting to the top
The road winds 25 km from the village of Mel (reachable from Belluno in 20 minutes by car) through beech and spruce forest. The surface is good tarmac and the route is popular with road cyclists in summer, so drive slowly and share the space generously.
At the summit you'll find the Rifugio Colle Visentin, a simple mountain hut serving polenta, sausages and local Valbelluna wines. It opens from late spring through October; check ahead in shoulder season as hours are weather-dependent.
What to look for
To the north, the jagged profile of the Schiara massif and the Pale di San Martino dominate. To the south on a clear day you can pick out the Euganean Hills, Lake Garda and — in winter after a tramontana wind clears the Po plain — the faint smudge of Venice's lagoon.
A short marked trail (about 40 minutes return) leads from the summit car park to a wooden cross and military observation point dating from WWI, adding a layer of history to the natural spectacle.
