Ksar of Béchar (Old Quarter)

Tucked behind the modern city, Béchar's ancient ksar is a labyrinth of ochre mud-brick alleys that have sheltered Saharan travellers for centuries. Walking its covered streets at dusk, when the light turns amber and the call to prayer echoes off the walls, is one of the most atmospheric experiences in western Algeria.

A Living Relic of the Sahara

The ksar predates the modern city by centuries, built when this wadi-fed oasis was already a vital stop on trans-Saharan trade routes. Its thick earthen walls were engineered to keep interiors cool even when temperatures outside soar past 40 °C — passive desert architecture at its most elegant.

Wander the covered passages and you will find carved wooden doorways, tiny artisan workshops, and glimpses of inner courtyards shaded by palm fronds. Unlike many North African ksour that have been abandoned, Béchar's old quarter remains a living neighbourhood where residents still go about daily life.

Architecture & Heritage

The construction technique — compressed mud mixed with straw and gypsum — gives the buildings a warm, sculptural quality that no photograph fully captures. Look up at the corbelled overhangs that bridge the lanes: they were designed to create shade and to allow women to move between houses unseen.

The ksar sits close to the Wadi Béchar, whose seasonal floods historically watered the date-palm groves that sustained the community. The interplay of river, palms, and earthen architecture makes this corner of the city uniquely photogenic at golden hour.
