Béchar Central Souk
The Central Souk is the true beating heart of Béchar — a sensory overload of colour, fragrance, and noise that makes every other shopping experience feel tame by comparison. Come hungry, come curious, and leave with a bag full of Medjool dates and a hand-stitched leather wallet.
What to Buy, What to Taste
Stalls overflow with colorful spices, dried herbs, and the region's celebrated dates — plump, caramel-sweet varieties grown in the palm groves watered by the Wadi Béchar. The market is also the best place to source the leatherwork and silver jewellery for which Béchar has been renowned for generations.
Look for the Kissaria arcades on the market's fringes: multi-storey galleries of small boutiques selling fabrics, embroidered gandouras, and hand-woven textiles. They offer a slightly calmer alternative to the open-air stalls while keeping the local, artisanal feel.
The Social Ritual of the Souk
Algerian market culture is communal by nature — meals are shared, tea is poured endlessly, and bargaining is a friendly sport rather than a confrontation. Pull up a stool at one of the tiny café counters inside the souk and accept the glass of mint tea you will inevitably be offered.
The souk is busiest on Thursday and Friday mornings, when traders from surrounding oasis villages bring in fresh produce, hand-made goods, and livestock. Arrive before 9 a.m. to see it at full roar before the heat of the day sends everyone indoors.
