Wendelstein Summit & Gacher Blick Platform

At 1,838 metres, the Wendelstein is the undisputed crown of the Bayrischzell skyline — and the vertiginous 'Gacher Blick' (Steep View) platform just metres from the Wendelsteinhaus delivers a panorama that sweeps from the Zugspitze to the Großglockner. Getting here is half the thrill: a large-cabin cable car rockets you from Bayrischzell-Osterhofen to the mountain station in under seven minutes.

The Ride Up

The Wendelstein Cable Car departs from Osterhofen, a hamlet of Bayrischzell, and climbs a jaw-dropping 932 metres of altitude difference in roughly 6.5 minutes, with a maximum ground clearance of 170 metres — expect gasps the moment the valley floor drops away beneath you.

For those who prefer a longer adventure, the trail from the Osterhofen valley station winds across alpine meadows and forested sections all the way to the summit, though the final stretch demands sure-footedness and a head for heights.

What Awaits at the Top

The Wendelstein is Bavaria's most eclectic summit: it hosts Germany's highest church (built in 1889), a self-guided show cave burrowed into the mountain's belly, a working observatory, and the Wendelsteinhaus restaurant serving roast pork with dumplings and cold Auerbräu beer on a sun-drenched terrace.

On clear winter days the snow-covered Central Alps stretch endlessly in every direction — a view that has been drawing artists and alpinists to this peak since the 19th century.

Practical Ascent Tips

The cable car runs every half hour and more frequently on busy days, but check the website for seasonal closures in November and April when maintenance shuts the line for short periods.

Combine both ascent routes for the classic experience: take the cable car up from Bayrischzell, then descend via the historic Wendelstein Rack Railway from Brannenburg — Germany's first high-alpine cog railway, operating since 1912.
