Alpenwirt Gasthof — Birthplace of the Tracht
Tucked on the main square of Bayrischzell, the Alpenwirt is not just a cosy Bavarian inn — it is the very room where, in 1883, a local schoolteacher named Josef Vogl and a handful of friends founded the world's first folk costume association, sparking a tradition that dressed Bavaria forever after.
A Living Piece of History
The founding meeting took place in what was then called Gasthof Neuwirt, later renamed Gasthof Wendelstein and now operating as the Alpenwirt. The building has changed names but the spirit has not: folk costume enthusiasts still gather here, and on festival evenings you are likely to see Lederhosen and Dirndl worn not as costume but as everyday pride.
Bayrischzell is widely credited as the birthplace of the modern Bavarian folk costume movement — a cultural legacy that makes this unassuming inn one of the most historically significant Gasthöfe in the entire Alpine region.
Eat and Drink Like a Local
The kitchen delivers classic Bavarian fare — expect hearty inn staples like Schweinsbraten (roast pork), Obatzda (spiced cheese spread) and freshly tapped regional beer. In summer, a roasted piglet is the house speciality, and regulars insist it is not to be missed.
The atmosphere is warm, loud and unapologetically local: wooden panelling, checked tablecloths and the kind of convivial noise that only a proper Bavarian Wirtshaus can produce.
