Trattoria Al Bassanello
Tucked into a side street near the covered market hall, Al Bassanello is the kind of trattoria that Bassano residents guard jealously: paper tablecloths, a handwritten daily menu, and cooking that follows the seasons and the market rather than any trend. This is where to eat baccalà alla vicentina, bigoli in salsa and braised rabbit with polenta without any fuss.
The Dishes You Must Order
Baccalà alla vicentina — salt cod slow-cooked in milk and onions until it collapses into a creamy, savoury mass — is the signature dish of the entire Vicenza-Bassano area and Al Bassanello does a definitive version, served on a slab of white polenta made from the local Marano variety of corn. It arrives in a small terracotta dish still bubbling from the oven.
In asparagus season (late March to late May) the kitchen pivots entirely: white Bassano asparagus appears as a starter with a soft-boiled egg and anchovies, as a risotto, and as a side to grilled local lamb. The chef sources directly from the growers on the Brenta plain, so the spears arrive the same morning they were cut.
Wine and Grappa to Match
The house carafe brings a pale, slightly fizzy Veneto bianco that cuts through the richness of the baccalà perfectly. The wine list also features bottles from Breganze DOC — particularly the Torcolato dessert wine from Maculan, which pairs beautifully with the local pastry called fugassa veneta.
After the meal, a small glass of Nardini bianca grappa is not optional — it is a digestive ritual that the waiter will suggest before you ask. Accept it.
Booking and Atmosphere
The room seats around 35 people and fills quickly on Thursday and Saturday market days, when half of Bassano seems to converge here for lunch. Book ahead for those days; on a quiet Tuesday you can usually walk in.
The owners speak limited English but communicate entirely adequately through pointing at the chalkboard and nodding with enthusiasm. Dress casually; this is emphatically not a white-tablecloth establishment.
