Mercato di Piazza Garibaldi
Every Thursday and Saturday morning, Piazza Garibaldi and the surrounding streets fill with stalls heaped with white asparagus from the nearby Bassano fields, mountain cheeses, dried mushrooms and bolts of fabric, turning the handsome arcaded square into the beating commercial heart of the town. This is where locals actually shop, and where you should too.
White Gold from the Brenta Plain
Bassano del Grappa's white asparagus — Asparago Bianco di Bassano DOP — is one of Italy's most prized vegetables, harvested from sandy Brenta riverbank soils between late March and late May. At the Thursday and Saturday market you can buy it directly from the growers who blanch the spears underground to keep them pale and tender.
Look for the official consortium label: genuine Bassano asparagus has a slightly curved tip, a violet-tinged base and a sweetness that the green variety simply cannot match. Vendors will often let you taste before you buy.
Beyond the Asparagus
Year-round stalls carry aged Asiago cheese from the plateau above town, dried porcini from Monte Grappa, local honey and bottles of Torcolato, the amber dessert wine made from dried Vespaiola grapes in nearby Breganze.
The fabric and household-goods section sprawls along Via Jacopo da Ponte and attracts a loyal crowd of Bassano housewives who have been coming every week for decades — a slice of unfiltered Veneto daily life that no guidebook can manufacture.
Eating Around the Market
After shopping, duck into one of the bars under the arcades of Piazza Garibaldi for a spritz and a tramezzino. Bar Danieli at the square's northern corner is a local institution that has been making sandwiches to order since the 1960s.
In asparagus season, several nearby trattorias — including the well-regarded Trattoria Al Sole on Via Jacopo da Ponte — put on a dedicated asparagus menu with dishes running from risotto to asparagus with a fried egg and a drizzle of local olive oil.
