Sentiero del Brenta & Parco Ragazzi del '99
A flat, well-marked riverside path follows the Brenta south from the Ponte Vecchio through willows and poplars to the Parco Ragazzi del '99 — a memorial park named for the seventeen-year-old boys conscripted in 1917 when Italy's army was collapsing — where the river widens into shingle beaches perfect for paddling and picnicking. It combines easy natural beauty with quietly moving history.
The Walk Along the Brenta
The sentiero begins at the southern end of the Ponte Vecchio and follows the left bank of the Brenta for approximately 3 km to the park. The path is paved and entirely flat, usable by prams and cyclists, and passes through a corridor of riparian woodland that feels surprisingly wild for a town of 40,000 people.
In spring the riverbanks are white with blackthorn blossom; in autumn the poplars turn a clean, sharp yellow that reflects in the green water. Herons fish from the shingle banks year-round and kingfishers are regularly spotted in the quieter stretches near the park.
The Parco Ragazzi del '99
The park takes its name from the ragazzi del '99 — the class of 1899, who turned eighteen in 1917 and were called up en masse after the catastrophic Italian defeat at Caporetto. Many were sent directly to the Monte Grappa front, visible from the park's northern edge, and suffered devastating casualties.
A modest but dignified memorial stands at the park's entrance, and the surrounding lawns and riverside shingle are now a favourite weekend destination for Bassano families. The juxtaposition of children playing on the same ground where young soldiers gathered before climbing to the front is quietly affecting.
Swimming and Picnicking
The Brenta here runs clear and cold over a broad shingle bed, and locals wade and swim in the calmer pools between July and September. The water is clean enough for swimming — the upper Brenta catchment is largely Alpine and undeveloped — though currents can be strong after rain.
Bring a picnic assembled from the Thursday or Saturday market: white asparagus frittata, a wedge of Asiago, bread from Panificio Colpo on Via Roma, and a bottle of chilled Soave. The park has picnic tables but the shingle banks are better.
