Ponte Vecchio degli Alpini
Bassano's iconic covered bridge, rebuilt countless times since the 13th century and most recently restored after World War II by the Alpine troops who gave it their name, arches gracefully over the green rush of the Brenta River. Standing on its planks at dusk, with the Dolomite foothills glowing behind you, is one of the most photogenic moments in all of the Veneto.
A Bridge Built by Soldiers
The current structure follows Palladio's 1569 design — a simple, elegant timber gallery resting on stone piers — and has been destroyed and rebuilt by flood and war more times than locals can count. The Alpini mountain troops reconstructed it after 1945 as an act of civic pride, and their brotherhood still gathers here every spring for a moving national rally.
Walk the full length slowly: the covered walkway frames postcard views upstream toward Monte Grappa and downstream toward the old tanneries of the Nardini distillery, whose white facade has sat at the bridge's foot since 1779.
Grappa at the Foot of the Bridge
Nardini is the oldest grappa distillery in Italy, and its little osteria-bar on the eastern bridgehead is the correct place to drink a small glass of bianca before or after your crossing. The round marble bar has barely changed since the 18th century and the prices are refreshingly honest.
A second historic bar, Grapperia Nardini, opened a striking bubble-shaped architectural annex in 2004 designed by Massimiliano Fuksas — worth a glance for the contrast between old stone and futurist glass.
Practical Tips for Your Visit
The bridge is free to walk and open at all hours. Early morning gives you mist on the Brenta and zero crowds; golden hour delivers warm light on the timber and the tannery facades.
The Museo degli Alpini, tucked into the tower at the northern end of the bridge, tells the story of Italy's mountain soldiers with maps, medals and wartime photographs — admission is minimal and it takes only 30 minutes.
