Maungawhau / Mount Eden Summit
At 196 metres, Maungawhau (Mount Eden) is the tallest of Auckland's 53 volcanic cones and the closest major summit to the CBD — making it the city's finest free viewpoint, full stop.
The Summit Experience
A 20-minute walk from the car park on Puhi Huia Road brings you to the grassy rim of a perfectly preserved volcanic crater, roughly 50 metres deep, that drops away dramatically at your feet. The 360-degree panorama sweeps from the CBD and Sky Tower to the Waitematā and Manukau Harbours, Rangitoto Island, and a scatter of other volcanic cones poking above the suburbs.
The summit path circles the entire crater rim, so you can shift from a city-facing shot to a harbour-facing one in under five minutes — bring a wide-angle lens and plan for at least 30 minutes on top.
How to Get There
From the CBD, take the train from Britomart to Mt Eden Station (about 10 minutes) and walk 25 minutes uphill, or catch a bus along Mt Eden Road and walk the final 600–800 m to the summit track.
The site is open at all hours and entry is completely free. A clear morning or late afternoon gives the best light; wind at the summit can be fierce, so bring a layer even on warm days.
