Karangahape Road (K' Road)
Karangahape Road — universally shortened to K' Road — is the most culturally layered street in Auckland, a kilometre-long ridge-top strip where independent galleries, vintage shops, Pacific fabric stores, queer bars, and some of the city's most interesting restaurants coexist in glorious, unpolished harmony.
What Makes K' Road Tick
The street runs along a ridge just south of the CBD and has resisted the sanitising forces of gentrification better than almost anywhere else in central Auckland. You'll find Māori and Pasifika-owned businesses sitting beside Filipino bakeries, natural-wine bars, tattoo studios and contemporary art spaces — all within a 15-minute walk from the Sky Tower.
The covered St Kevin's Arcade, a 1924 heritage building halfway along the strip, is a particular highlight: its lower level opens onto Myers Park with a sweeping staircase, and the arcade itself houses independent coffee roasters, vintage clothing dealers and a beloved record shop.
When to Visit & What to Eat
K' Road rewards an evening visit when its bars and restaurants hit their stride. Nanam serves Filipino-inspired small plates that have earned a devoted following, while the strip's late-night ramen and dumpling spots keep things going well past midnight.
The neighbourhood is also the anchor of Auckland Pride each February, when the street explodes into colour and the whole precinct becomes one of the city's most joyful public spectacles. Any time of year, a slow afternoon wander from the top of Queen Street up to Ponsonby Road is the best possible introduction to the real Auckland.
