Scuba Diving at Gruta Azul & Ilha dos Porcos
Arraial do Cabo is widely considered the best scuba diving destination in southeastern Brazil, and once you drop below the surface at sites like the Gruta Azul sea cave or the rock pinnacles of Ilha dos Porcos, it is easy to understand why. The Cabo Frio upwelling brings cool, nutrient-rich Atlantic water that delivers exceptional visibility and an extraordinary cast of marine life.
What Makes the Diving Special
The cold-water upwelling that defines Arraial do Cabo's oceanography fuels remarkable biodiversity and can deliver visibility that rivals the Caribbean. Divers regularly encounter sea turtles, moray eels, shoals of colourful reef fish, and reef sharks. The renowned dive sites — Gruta Azul, Ilha dos Porcos, and Pedra Vermelha — range from shallow training bays to deeper walls and dramatic swim-throughs.
Gruta Azul (the Blue Grotto) is the showstopper: a gap at the top of the cave allows sunlight to pierce through and cast a dazzling electric-blue light into the water below. Its triangular entrance has been compared to a Gothic cathedral. The dive is technical and best suited to advanced divers, but non-divers can admire the cave entrance from the surface on a standard boat tour.
Logistics: Getting in the Water
Almost all diving departs from Praia dos Anjos. Most dive shops offer PADI courses as well as daily guided trips, making Arraial do Cabo equally accessible to first-timers doing a baptism dive and experienced divers looking for two-tank days. Tours typically run around three and a half hours and equipment is included.
A small boarding fee of R$10 cash per person is charged at the pier by the local fishing institute — bring coins or small notes. The exact dive site is confirmed on the day based on wind direction and sea conditions, so stay flexible and trust your guide.
