The View That Earns Its Reputation
The mirante sits at the top of the Pontal do Atalaia headland and gives a sweeping 360-degree view of the region: the twin Prainhas beaches directly below with their impossibly clear water, the open ocean to one side, and the broad arc of Praia Grande to the other. It is consistently cited as one of the best panoramas in Arraial do Cabo, and the iconic twin wooden staircases leading down to the water make it instantly recognisable on social media.
The area features several distinct viewpoints, each offering a slightly different perspective. The most popular is Mirante do Pontal itself, but walking the cliff path rewards you with ever-changing angles over the coves and rock formations below.
Sunset & Practical Notes
Sunset at Pontal do Atalaia is particularly special. Many visitors gather here in the evening to watch the sun drop below the horizon, painting the sky in deep oranges and pinks above the Atlantic. Arrive at least 30 minutes early, as this popular spot fills up fast.
You can drive or hike up to the mirante — the road is unpaved and bumpy but manageable by car or scooter. Boat tours also stop here, so if you are doing a day on the water you will likely get a sea-level view of the staircases from below before climbing up on foot.
