Rota Vicentina — Fishermen's Trail (Aljezur Section)

The Trilho dos Pescadores (Fishermen's Trail) passes directly through the Aljezur municipality, threading between wave-battered cliffs, hidden cove beaches and farmland fragrant with wild herbs. Walking even a single stage here — say, from Arrifana south to Carrapateira — is to understand why this coastline is one of the most protected in all of Europe.

Europe's Wildest Coastal Walk

The Rota Vicentina's Fishermen's Trail runs along the Atlantic edge of the Southwest Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, a protected area of extraordinary ecological richness. The Aljezur section passes cliff tops where white storks nest directly on the rock face — a phenomenon found almost nowhere else on earth — and descends to beaches like Praia da Amoreira, where the Aljezur River meets the sea in a wide, dune-backed estuary ideal for paddleboarding and tidal-pool exploration.

The trail also links to Praia da Bordeira near Carrapateira, where extensive dune fields stretch behind a vast, wild beach reminiscent of the Sahara's edge. The dramatic coastal cliffs, the dune systems and the sheer absence of development make every kilometre feel like a reward.

Planning Your Stage

The section from Arrifana south to Carrapateira covers roughly 18–20 km and is rated medium difficulty, with a modest ascent and well-marked paths throughout the Rota Vicentina network. Hikers can tackle it as a full day out from Aljezur town, arranging a taxi back from Carrapateira, or break it into shorter out-and-back walks from either end.

Even a 2-kilometre clifftop stroll north from Arrifana beach gives non-hikers a taste of the trail's drama: vertiginous Atlantic views, wildflowers clinging to the rock, and the kind of silence that reminds you how rare genuinely wild coastline has become. Spring (March–May) is the finest season, when the clifftops blaze with colour and the light is sharp and golden.
