Pont'a Pé Restaurant

Tucked into the old town in a classic whitewashed Algarvean building trimmed with blue, Pont'a Pé is the restaurant that locals from Aljezur recommend to each other — which is about the highest endorsement any restaurant in Portugal can earn. Order the polvo à lagareiro and settle in.

Honest Food in the Old Town

Pont'a Pé sits in the old part of Aljezur, its simple dining room — largely built from wood — giving it a warm, unfussy atmosphere that matches the food. The menu leans hard into the sea: fresh-caught fish, grilled to order, alongside the house speciality of polvo à lagareiro (oven-baked octopus dressed with olive oil and garlic), a dish that showcases the quality of the local catch without any culinary theatrics.

The cuisine of Aljezur is rooted in two ingredients above all others: fish from the Atlantic and sweet potatoes from the surrounding fields. Pont'a Pé honours both, weaving batata-doce into soups, sides and even dessert — most famously the torta de batata-doce e amêndoa, a sweet potato and almond cake that is reason enough to save room.

The Terrace and the River

The preferred table at Pont'a Pé is downstairs, where a terrace opens beside the Ribeira de Aljezur river — a genuinely lovely spot for a long, unhurried lunch. The sound of the water, a carafe of local wine, and a plate of grilled fish is the western Algarve distilled into a single meal.

Prices are honest and portions are generous. The restaurant is a favourite among both long-term residents and visiting food writers precisely because it has never felt the need to dress itself up for tourists — the food, the setting and the welcome do all the work.
