Praia da Arrifana
Tucked inside a dramatic horseshoe of golden cliffs, Arrifana is the beach that stops first-timers in their tracks the moment they crest the headland road. Consistent Atlantic swells, clear water, and the brooding ruins of the Fortaleza de Arrifana on the promontory above make this a picture that belongs on every Algarve itinerary.
Waves, Cliffs and a Fortress on the Bluff
Praia da Arrifana is sheltered by dramatic cliffs that wrap around a crescent of golden sand, creating a natural amphitheatre open only to the sea. The consistent waves attract surfers of all levels year-round, and several surf schools operate on the beach, making it an ideal place to take a first lesson.
Looming above the southern headland are the ruins of the Fortaleza de Arrifana, a clifftop fortification with vertiginous views down to the surf. A short walk up to the fortress walls is one of the most exhilarating viewpoints on the entire Costa Vicentina coast.
Beyond the Surf
Non-surfers will find plenty of space on the wide sandy floor, and the sheltered bay keeps the water calmer closer to shore. A handful of beach restaurants and a small fishing harbour at the northern end of the bay add a lived-in, local character that the more developed Algarve beaches have long lost.
Arrifana sits within the Southwest Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park, which means development is tightly controlled — no beach clubs, no jet-skis, no umbrellas rented by the kilometre. What you get instead is one of Portugal's most cinematically beautiful stretches of coastline, almost exactly as nature left it.
