A Market Built on a Famous Tuber
Established in 1981, the Mercado Municipal is the beating heart of the community, drawing fishermen, farmers and home cooks every morning. Stalls overflow with seasonal fruit and vegetables, and pride of place always goes to the batata-doce de Aljezur — the sweet potato that has made this small town the largest producer of the crop in all of Portugal.
The market's fish and seafood section reflects the town's coastal heritage directly: expect whole fish landed that same morning at Arrifana, alongside the prized percebes (goose barnacles) scraped from the rocky headlands by local fishermen. Artisanal honey, jams and handmade crafts round out the stalls.
How to Shop Like a Local
Arrive before 10 am to catch the market at its most animated — vendors are chatty, produce is freshest, and the espresso at the café beside the entrance is a ritual worth joining. Bring cash, as not all stalls accept cards, and don't be shy about asking for a taste before you buy.
