Universidad de Alcalá & Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso
Alcalá de Henares owes its entire identity to this stunning 15th-century university complex, the first purpose-built Renaissance university in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. Walking through the Plateresque façade of the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso feels like stepping into the intellectual heart of the Spanish Golden Age.
The Paraninfo & Cervantes Connection
The Paraninfo, or Great Hall, is where the King and Queen of Spain annually award the Premio Cervantes — the most prestigious literary prize in the Spanish-speaking world. Its Mudéjar artesonado ceiling is a jaw-dropping lacework of carved timber that took decades to complete.
Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, was baptised just a few streets away, and the university keeps his legacy alive at every turn. The entire historic centre is essentially a living monument to the man who invented the modern novel.
Guided Tours & Practical Access
Guided tours of the Colegio Mayor depart regularly from the Patio de Santo Tomás and last about 45 minutes, taking you through the three famous patios, the Capilla de San Ildefonso with its Cisneros tomb, and the Paraninfo itself.
The university buildings are still in active academic use, which makes the experience feel genuinely alive rather than museum-like. Arrive early on weekday mornings to catch students crossing the same stone courtyards that Lope de Vega once walked.
