Riberas del Henares Natural Park

Flowing right along the southern edge of the historic centre, the Río Henares and its protected riparian forest form one of the most accessible and underrated urban nature escapes in the Community of Madrid. The Parque Natural del Curso Medio del Río Henares is a genuine wildlife corridor where herons, kingfishers and otters coexist with joggers and picnicking families just ten minutes' walk from

Walking & Cycling the Riverbanks

A well-maintained greenway follows the river for several kilometres in both directions from the old town, passing through gallery forests of white poplars, willows and tamarisk that turn a blazing gold and amber in October and November. The flat, paved path is ideal for cycling — bike hire is available in the city centre — and connects Alcalá to the neighbouring town of Meco to the east.

The best single stretch for wildlife is between the Puente de Zulema and the old Roman ford at Vado de Zulema, where the river widens into shallow gravel bars favoured by little ringed plovers and common sandpipers during spring migration. Dawn and dusk are the golden hours.

Picnicking & Seasonal Highlights

The shaded riverbank meadows between the Puente Nuevo and the Molino de la Poveda are the city's favourite picnic grounds, busy with families on Sunday afternoons and almost deserted on weekday mornings. The old mill building itself, though partly ruined, makes a striking photographic backdrop.

In spring the white poplar forest erupts in a blizzard of cotton-like seeds that locals call the nevada de álamos — the poplar snowstorm — a surreal and beautiful phenomenon that lasts about two weeks in late May. In winter, large flocks of fieldfares and redwings strip the hawthorn berries along the path edges.
