Mercado de Abastos de Alcalá de Henares
The Mercado de Abastos on Calle de Libreros is the beating culinary heart of Alcalá de Henares, where local farmers, cheesemongers and fishmongers have been trading since the 19th century. It is the best single place in the city to taste the ingredients that define Madrid-region cooking before they ever reach a restaurant plate.
What to Look For
Head straight to the cheese stalls for manchego in all its aged varieties — fresco, semicurado and the nutty, crystalline añejo — alongside lesser-known local sheep's cheeses from the Alcarria plateau. The charcuterie counters pile high with morcilla de Burgos, jamón serrano and the paprika-red chorizo that ends up in those migas you'll eat at Hostería del Estudiante.
The fresh produce section reflects the fertile Henares river valley: fat white asparagus in spring, enormous red peppers in late summer and wild mushrooms — boletus, níscalos and rebozuelos — from October onwards. Vendors are generous with samples if you show genuine curiosity.
Market Culture & Timing
Saturday morning is the liveliest session, when the outdoor stalls spill onto the surrounding streets and local housewives conduct the serious business of the week's shopping with forensic attention to quality. Arrive before 10:00 to beat the crowds and catch the best of the fish delivery.
Several bar-counters inside the market open from 08:00 and serve breakfast bocadillos and strong café con leche to stallholders and early shoppers — the cheapest and most authentic breakfast in the city by some margin.
