Hostería del Estudiante
Tucked inside a beautifully preserved 15th-century cloister that once housed university students, Hostería del Estudiante is the most atmospheric restaurant in Alcalá de Henares — and one of the most storied in the entire Community of Madrid. The Parador-run kitchen champions hearty Castilian cooking in a setting that feels more like a film set than a dining room.
What to Order
The roast suckling pig (cochinillo asado) and roast lamb (cordero asado) are the undisputed stars, slow-cooked in traditional wood-fired ovens and served with nothing more than their own juices and a wedge of bread. The migas manchegas — breadcrumbs fried with chorizo and peppers — make an ideal starter on a cool autumn morning.
For dessert, do not skip the torrijas, a Spanish version of French toast soaked in wine and honey that has been on the menu here for decades. Wash everything down with a robust Ribera del Duero red from the well-curated Spanish wine list.
The Setting & History
The restaurant occupies the Colegio de San Jerónimo, a Gothic-Mudéjar cloister dating to the late 15th century, and the stone arches, terracotta floors and antique wooden furniture create an ambience that no modern interior designer could replicate.
Lunch here on a Sunday is a full-blown Castilian ritual: multi-generational families, unhurried service and a meal that stretches comfortably past three in the afternoon. Reserve a table by the inner courtyard for the best light.
