Miradouro do Pau da Bandeira
While day-trippers queue for selfies at the old town clifftop, those in the know walk ten minutes west along the coastal path to the Miradouro do Pau da Bandeira — a raw, unfenced lookout perched 50 metres above the Atlantic where the ochre sandstone cliffs plunge dramatically into turquoise water. Sunrise here is quietly extraordinary.
The View and the Walk
The miradouro sits at the western end of the Albufeira coastal walking trail, a well-marked path that hugs the clifftop from Praia do Peneco westward past Praia de São Rafael. The trail is mostly flat, paved in places and takes about 25 minutes at a leisurely pace — with constant sea views the whole way.
From the lookout you can see the full sweep of the Albufeira bay, the striped rock stacks at Praia da Galé to the west, and on clear days the faint outline of Portimão's coastline. Bring a wide-angle lens or your best panorama setting.
Best Times to Visit
The golden hour before sunset (roughly 7–8 pm in summer) turns the sandstone cliffs a deep amber and the sea an almost implausible shade of cobalt. A handful of locals bring wine and watch the sun drop from the clifftop bench — join them.
Early morning walkers are rewarded with mist rolling off the Atlantic and virtually no one else around. The path is lit in places but a torch is useful if you head out before dawn.
