Albufeira Old Town (Cidade Velha)
Tumbling down a sandstone cliff toward the sea, Albufeira's original Moorish quarter is a labyrinth of cobbled alleys, bougainvillea-draped walls and terracotta rooftops that somehow stays charming even in high summer. Duck off the main drag and you'll find century-old azulejo tiles, tiny chapels and fishermen's widows tending flower pots on doorsteps.
The Heart of the Old Town
Start at Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco, the central square ringed by café terraces and the striking Igreja de Sant'Ana, rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. From here every alley leads somewhere photogenic — follow the sound of fado drifting from open windows on summer evenings.
The pedestrianised Rua 5 de Outubro is lined with independent shops selling hand-painted ceramics, cork bags and local honey. It spills out onto the clifftop miradouro overlooking Praia dos Pescadores, one of the finest sea views in town.
After Dark in the Cidade Velha
By night the old town glows gold under warm lantern light. The narrow Rua Cândido dos Reis and Rua São Gonçalo de Lagos fill with locals and visitors sharing petiscos — small plates of grilled chouriço, amêijoas à Bulhão Pato (clams in garlic and white wine) and piri-piri prawns.
Several family-run tascas here have been operating for decades; look for handwritten menus chalked on boards outside and plastic tablecloths inside — reliable signs of honest, affordable cooking.
