Albufeira Municipal Market (Mercado Municipal)
Hidden from the resort strip in a purpose-built hall on Rua da Igreja Nova, Albufeira's daily municipal market is where locals actually shop — and where you can load up on the freshest figs, blood oranges, smoked sausages and just-landed seafood the region produces. Arrive before 9 am for the widest choice and the best banter.
What to Buy and Eat
The ground floor is a riot of colour: pyramids of carob pods, baskets of medronho berries, trays of gleaming sea bream and bags of fleur de sel from the Ria Formosa. Vendors are generous with tastings — you'll rarely leave without a wedge of soft Algarve almond cake pressed into your hand.
Upstairs, a handful of counter-service restaurants serve the market workers' lunch from around 11 am: cataplana de peixe (fish stew cooked in a copper clam-shell pot), grilled sardines and açorda de marisco (a thick seafood bread soup). Portions are huge and prices rarely top €10.
Timing and Practicalities
The market runs Monday to Saturday, with Saturday being the liveliest day when regional producers from inland villages arrive with honey, olive oil and hand-rolled marzipan figurines shaped like fish and roosters.
The building is a short walk uphill from the old town tunnel — follow Rua da Igreja Nova north from Largo Engenheiro Duarte Pacheco. Bring a canvas bag, small change and an appetite.
