A Ruína Restaurant
Carved into the clifftop at the eastern end of Praia dos Pescadores, A Ruína is Albufeira's most atmospheric seafood institution — a multi-level warren of terraces, stone arches and open grills where the catch of the day arrives straight from the boats that dock on the beach below. It has been feeding locals and lucky visitors since 1969.
What to Order
The menu changes daily depending on what the fishermen bring in, but the grilled dourada (sea bream) and robalo (sea bass) cooked over charcoal are perennial standouts. Order them with batatas a murro — oven-smashed potatoes doused in olive oil and garlic — and a bottle of crisp Alentejo white.
The açorda de gambas (a thick, garlicky bread-and-prawn stew) is the dish regulars swear by. It arrives bubbling in a clay pot and is deeply savoury in the way that only comes from a stock made with whole prawn heads. Do not skip it.
The Setting
The upper terrace juts out over the cliff edge, giving you the sensation of dining suspended above the Atlantic. Watch the fishing boats come and go on Praia dos Pescadores as you eat — it's a scene that hasn't changed much in half a century.
Book a table on the terrace at least a day ahead in July and August. The ground-floor sala is more casual and accepts walk-ins more readily, but the view from the top is worth the planning.
