Al Sahaby Lane Restaurant
Perched above the Nefertiti Hotel on a rooftop terrace that looks straight down the spine of Luxor Temple, Al Sahaby Lane has been feeding travellers and locals since 1930 — and the kofta, the molokheya soup and the camel-meat pot are every bit as legendary as the view. This is the one dinner in Luxor you will still be talking about a decade later.
A Family Recipe Older Than Your Guidebook
The restaurant was established in 1930 by the Al-Sahaby family's great-grandfather and has been recommended by foreign travel guides and publications ever since — a rare case of a legendary reputation that the food actually lives up to.
The menu is unapologetically Egyptian: ful medames, ta'ameya, grilled kofta, roast chicken, and the standout dish — a slow-cooked camel meat pot served with roasted vegetables and freekeh, the nutty durum-wheat grain that has been eaten in Upper Egypt for millennia.
The View is Half the Meal
Grab a table on the upper terrace as the sun sets and watch Luxor Temple's floodlights flicker on one by one, turning the obelisk and the ram-headed sphinxes into pure theatre — all of it free with your dinner.
The rooftop also offers a welcome escape from the noise of the market below; the breeze off the Nile makes it one of the coolest outdoor dining spots in the city on a warm evening.
What to Order
Start with the spicy potatoes, falafel with tahini, and muttabbal (smoky aubergine dip); follow with kofta or the camel pot; finish with a glass of karkadeh (chilled hibiscus tea) — sweet, tart and the colour of rubies.
The set menus represent excellent value and arrive with a table full of salads, rice and soup — order à la carte only if you have a specific dish in mind.
