Villa Contarini Mocenigo
Two buildings sit on the summit of Colle Messano, west of Asolo's old streets, connected by a tunnel that runs clean through the hill beneath them. The older structure dates to 1558; the other came later, in the eighteenth century. What holds them together — literally and visually — is the southern façade frescoed in the sixteenth century by Lattanzio Gambara, its painted surfaces still facing the slope.
Villa Contarini Mocenigo is a private residence now, which means most days you can only see it from the outside. The FAI — Italy's National Trust — opens it occasionally, and those are the days worth planning around.

The story behind Villa Contarini Mocenigo
The Surian family built the complex in 1558, high on Messano hill above Asolo. It passed by inheritance to the Contarini, and then through a succession of Venetian patrician families — Bragadini, Soranzo, Pasqualini — across the early nineteenth century. The frescoes on the southern façade, attributed to Lattanzio Gambara, survive from that first phase of construction.
In 1895 the property was sold to the Mekhitarist friars, the Armenian Catholic congregation based on the island of San Lazzaro degli Armeni in the Venetian lagoon. It has since returned to private hands.
Good to know
Access is limited to FAI open days — check the FAI website or contact the Asolo tourist office for the schedule before you travel. The closest train station is Castelfranco Veneto; Bus 204 runs to Asolo in around thirty minutes, with a shuttle minibus from Ca' Vescovo up to the centre every half-hour.
July and August are the warmest months, with daytime temperatures around 28°C, though the hilltop position brings some relief. Spring and early autumn — April through May, September into October — offer mild days and clearer light for photographing the frescoed façade.

The best: architecture and events hold here. Instagrammable place for pics. Went to a wine tasting event that was cool, a lot of varieties of wine to taste. A lot of parking spots outside.
I was here in December 2021 and the only way to visit was to phone ahead and book. Whether compulsory bookings are due to COVID restrictions or simply that's how the villa is always run, I don't know. Anyway, even from outside the building is spectacular!
In the middle of 'nowhere,' a majestic Venetian masterpiece. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to visit the inside this time, but I definitely want to visit again properly!
A real impressive castle! The castle is in private hands and can only be visited in a guided tour by reservation!
I believe you can only take a guided tour but this place is known more for its large events usually related to food and antiques. Has several bars and restaurants around. Worth a visit.
