Fontana Maggiore di Asolo
At the centre of Piazza Garibaldi, a fountain runs off water that has been moving through these hills for roughly two thousand years. The Roman aqueduct that feeds it — drawn from a source locals call the Bot — predates the current stonework by more than a millennium, which gives the whole thing a quiet depth that the 1575 carved date only hints at.
The piazza itself is compact and unsentimental, ringed by parked bikes and the odd car rather than pedestrian grandeur. Caffè Centrale looks directly onto the fountain from one side, as it has since the 1700s. In the evening, locals drift here to talk. The water keeps going.

The fountain's visible structure dates to 1575, when Podestà Giovanni Pisani oversaw a restoration — his name and the date are still cut into the central section, alongside a fragment of Roman column that anchors the whole thing to a much older water system.
For most of Asolo's history, this was the practical heart of the town: the primary place residents collected water, fed by underground aqueducts. That changed only in the early twentieth century. The winged lion of San Marco that crowns the fountain today was sculpted by the Venetian Antonio Dal Zotto and installed in 1918, replacing a pinecone that had stood in for roughly a century after French soldiers destroyed the original lion in 1797.

The fountain is in a public square, free and open around the clock. Asolo has no train station; the most practical approach is bus from Treviso or Castelfranco Veneto to Ca' Vescovo, then the De Zen shuttle up into the historic centre, running roughly every half-hour. May, June, and September offer the most comfortable weather.
Summers are warm, with July averaging around 21°C — good for sitting in the piazza without much shade. Spring and early autumn are mild and quieter. Winter drops close to freezing in January and the village empties out considerably; November brings the heaviest rainfall.

A beautiful place
The square and fountain are very charming. The Sunday antiques market is lovely. A pleasant village to visit, but be careful: the cyclists who constantly pass through the historic center are riding too fast and are dangerous for children and adults alike. They don't pay the slightest attention to anything. Unbelievable.
Asolo's Fontana Maggiore, located in Piazza Garibaldi, is the historic heart of the town and a symbol of its ancient water supply. Rebuilt in 1575 under Podestà Giovanni Pisani, it retains stone elements, while the winged lion of Saint Mark, a work by Antonio Dal Zotto (1910-1918), replaces an ancient lion destroyed by the French in 1797. …it really caught my attention!!…this beautiful fountain!!…it is also called the “Great Fountain” or the “Navel of the City”!!…but it is the Fontana Maggiore!!…that’s why I am in Asolo!!…beautiful Venetian village!!…and exactly in Piazza Garibaldi!!…the heart of the historic center!!…in the old days!!…it was the water supply for the inhabitants for a long time!!…so it is believed to be very ancient!!…it is even said that the central column dates back to the Roman era!!…clearly remodeled and restored over time due to the damage of the passing years and meteorological events!!…to maintain its beauty and historical value!!…but I must say that it presents itself very well!!…at the top of the column you can see the winged lion of San Marco!!…symbol of the Republic of Venice!!…which unfortunately!!…is not the original!!…the original was destroyed by Napoleon’s troops!!…the one we see now is only a copy!!…what can I say!!…it is truly a beautiful fountain!!…so linked to the inhabitants of the village!!…who provided their water supply here until the first thirty years of the last century!!…it's the Fontana Maggiore!!…in Piazza Garibaldi in Asolo!!…🇮🇹⛲️🌊🎉⬆️‼️
