Villa Bellini
The two enormous Ficus microcarpa trees flanking the main gate on Via Etnea are the first thing you notice — their aerial roots dropping like curtains, their canopies wide enough to park a bus under. Past them, a floral clock ticks in living evergreen plants, updated daily by the park's gardeners. Villa Bellini is Catania's only large public garden, and on any given evening it belongs entirely to the city's own people: couples on benches, teenagers cutting across the palm-lined avenue, older men in no particular hurry.
Among 106 mostly exotic and subtropical species, two hills divide the park's geography. On the south hill, a wrought-iron Moorish kiosk — the so-called Cloister of Music — still stands from 1879. On the west side, an Avenue of Famous Men lines up marble busts and a bronze of Giuseppe Mazzini beside a dodecahedral sundial.

People who come back tend to time it for the bandstand concerts on summer evenings, when the hilltop fills up and the city noise drops away. The floral clock is worth a look first thing in the morning, before the heat sets in. The secondary entrance on Piazza Roma is quieter than the Via Etnea gate.
The story behind Villa Bellini
The land was originally a private garden maze belonging to Ignazio Paternò Castello, Prince of Biscari, before the Comune di Catania bought it in 1854. The municipality commissioned architect Landolina to convert the maze into a public park, though the transformation was gradual. Further land acquisitions through 1875 led to unification work beginning in 1877, and the park formally opened in 1883.
The Moorish iron kiosk on the south hill dates from 1879 and hosted classical concerts until 1958. A separate Art Nouveau pavilion on the north hill — nicknamed the Chinese Kiosk despite having no connection to China — once housed a library before being lost to fire. The monumental entrance on Via Etnea was added in 1932. After a long period of decline, the park reopened following restoration in 2010.
Good to know
Enter from Via Etnea 292 or Piazza Roma; both are an easy walk from Piazza Duomo. Entry is free. Summer hours run until 11 PM, shorter in winter. Midday in July and August is genuinely punishing — come early or after 6 PM.
Catania summers are hot and dry; the park's canopy offers real shade, but midday from June through August is best avoided. Spring and autumn are ideal — warm enough to linger, cool enough to walk the hills without effort.

I visited the park on 2 February 2026 at around 3pm. It was a well-maintained park with basic facilities like benches and a snack kiosk. At the time of visit, I was fortunate to be able to listen to some wonderful classic music played by a professional piano musician. He sat in front of the fountain and hence I could sit on one of the benches to enjoy the music.
A relaxing and gorgeous place for a walk to chill. Full of statues, trees and flowers. Loved the walk where you are surrounded by all these statues, makes the garden really special. It's a must see when in Catania. 👍👌
I was at first sceptical about that's so special about this park and why I saw it multiple times in the places you should visit in Catania, but I wasn't disappointed at all. The place helped us as a place to get rid of the sun and the heat, we explored around and stayed there for a while.
Walk on so very busy ..lovely well looked after space ..Have tunnels somewhere but couldn't find them . Nice to sit down
A lovely park directly on the Via Etenea. The park covers a large area this many paths and shady areas. Entry is free, the park was open until 19:00 when we visited.
