The name above the door is Bellini, and the building takes that dedication seriously. Inaugurated on 31 May 1890 with a performance of *Norma* — the composer's own masterwork — this 1,200-seat theatre on Piazza Vincenzo Bellini has spent more than a century earning its reputation for sound. Maria Callas, who sang *Norma* here three consecutive seasons in the early 1950s, called the acoustics 'surpassing.' Tenor Beniamino Gigli went further, pronouncing it the best theatre room in the world for the purpose.
Inside, the red-plush interior rises through four tiers of boxes to a ceiling painted by Ernesto Bellandi with scenes from Bellini's operas. The marble foyer — the Ridotto — is stuccoed and formal, a statue of the composer standing between its central arches. The neo-baroque facade faces a small piazza; the scale is human, not imperial.

The story behind Teatro Massimo Bellini
The idea of a grand theatre for Catania predates this building by nearly a century. Planning began in the aftermath of the 1693 earthquake that flattened the city, and a foundation stone was laid in 1812 to architect Salvatore Zahra Buda's designs. Funding collapsed, and a smaller provisional theatre opened in 1822 — later destroyed in the Second World War. The project was revived in 1870, when Andrea Scala took the lead with Milanese architect Carlo Sada as co-designer, drawing on the French eclecticism of Charles Garnier's Paris Opera for the facade.
Construction finished in 1887; the theatre opened three years later. The curtain painted by Giuseppe Sciuti — depicting Catania's victory over the Libyans — hangs behind the stage, and Bellandi's frescoed ceiling maps Bellini's operatic legacy overhead. A major renovation completed in 2001 marked the composer's bicentennial.

Guided tours run Tuesday through Friday from 09:00, with an afternoon session Wednesday–Friday at 16:00. Tickets are €4 for groups, seniors and under-18s. The theatre itself is under renovation from 11 May to 31 December 2026 — check current performance schedules, as productions move to Teatro Metropolitan and Teatro Sangiorgi during that period. The nearest bus stop is a three-minute walk.

Super friendly staff all round who are willing to chat and get to know you a bit so they can give you good recommendations around town. The place its self is beautiful and gives any opera house in London a run for its money, in fact I believe it outdoes all of them as this place is so understated and the small entrance way gives birth to an even greater spectacle. So much history here I highly recommend going on the tour which can be in English or Italian or both Thanks
Theatre Bellini is an amazing building! This classical building has been built to mark the Catania born composer Vincenzo Bellini. We couldn't see the inside sadly as there weren't any performances while we were visiting Catania in Sicily.
Beautiful opera house with lots of leg room in the stalls. Prices very reasonable. Staff very helpful.
