Nine courts, a pro shop, padel, mini football, and a restaurant where the pizza comes out of a proper kitchen — the Vilamoura Tennis Academy is less a boutique facility than a small sports campus dropped into the middle of the resort, about 500 metres back from the Marina along Avenida João Meireles.

The mix of surfaces, floodlit courts, and indoor options means play continues regardless of the hour or a passing cloud. Staff speak English, Portuguese, French, Spanish, and German, which in practice means very little gets lost in translation when you're booking a court or signing a child into the tennis school.

💛 What travellers fall for

Regulars tend to mention two things: the outdoor pizzeria terrace, which works better than it has any right to for a post-match dinner, and the parking lot — go slow, because the kerbs are unforgiving on low-slung cars. The coffee at the café is also consistently flagged as a reason to arrive a little early.

Good to know
Court rental, lesson pricing, and membership rates are set by the club directly — call +351 289 324 123 or enquire in person. The tennis school runs September to June. Within 200 metres you'll find a supermarket and pharmacy, so a half-day here is logistically self-contained.

The story

How Vilamoura Tennis Academy came to be

Vilamoura as a resort took shape over roughly four decades, and the Tennis Academy was conceived as part of that infrastructure — designed from the outset to be one of the largest tennis facilities in Portugal, with enough courts and supporting amenities to attract international tournament play and pre-season training camps.

The Algarve's dry winters and mild springs made it a practical choice for players needing reliable court time outside the European summer circuit. The academy's scale — courts for adults, mini courts for children, padel alongside traditional tennis — reflects an ambition to serve both the touring professional and the family on a two-week holiday.

When to go

The outdoor courts are at their most comfortable from May through June and again in September, when daytime temperatures sit between 21°C and 25°C and rain is rare. July and August are hotter and drier, which suits early-morning sessions; the floodlit courts make evening play the practical choice once summer afternoons peak.
