Torre Asciola
Two goats stand guard outside an 800-year-old cylindrical tower on the promontory above Marina di Praia — which tells you something about the tempo of this place. Torre Asciola was built in 1270 as part of a chain of around thirty watchtowers strung along the Amalfi Coast, each positioned to relay warnings of approaching Saracen ships by fire or signal.
For the past three decades, sculptor Paolo Sandulli has worked inside the tower, filling it with figures drawn from the sea — fishermen, dolphins, water nymphs. The path up from La Praia winds through carob, myrtle and olive trees, with ceramic artworks pressed into the walls along the way as part of Praiano's open-air NaturArte project.

Check whether Sandulli has an exhibition on before you go — access to the tower itself depends on what's happening inside, and the studio operates informally.
The story behind Torre Asciola
The tower dates to 1270, one of roughly thirty defensive structures the medieval towns of the Amalfi Coast erected against Saracen raids. Positioned on a sea-facing promontory, it was part of a coordinated warning system — fire signals passed tower to tower along the coastline, giving coastal settlements just enough time to respond.
Of the surviving towers, Torre Asciola is considered among the best preserved, its cylindrical form and escarpment base largely intact. At some point it passed into private hands, and for the last thirty years artist Paolo Sandulli has occupied it as a studio, staging exhibitions that bring visitors to a structure that might otherwise be seen only from the water.
Good to know
Take the stairs down from Praiano toward Spiaggia La Praia and follow the arrows — there's a meaningful descent involved. Arrive by SITA bus on the Sorrento–Amalfi coastal route (Line 163); the nearest stop is Praiano. Spring and early autumn keep the path from feeling crowded.
The walk to the tower is exposed and steep enough that summer midday heat — temperatures reach around 28°C in August — makes the shoulder seasons a more comfortable choice. April through June and September through October keep conditions pleasant; winter brings rain and some path closures.
